Marcie JoyMarcie is an Internationally Renowned Singer/Songwriter for various Major Electronic labels. She writes and performs multiple genres, and has charted in the Top 10 worldwide. Her tunes have the support of Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, Above & Beyond, Ferry Corsten, XM Radio, BBC, Music Choice, Markus Schulz, Roger Shah, Matt Darey, Solarstone, and more.

Sameer and Jacquelina caught up with Marcie for the second time to interview her for Trance Podium.

With your show "Marcie presents Behind The Lyric", that explores the stories behind the lyrics of Electronic Dance Music, what provoked you to come up with a show examining music in this way?

I wanted to hear straight from the Artists what inspires them to write. Often my own lyrics are intensely personal. Writing a song can be an emotionally difficult and therapeutic experience. It can also be a lighthearted fun experience. Or a combination of both. It's not a static process. I wondered if it was the same for other Artists. I also wanted to know how listeners are affected by the lyrics they hear. "Behind The Lyric" focuses on the craft of songwriting, and the personal elements that go into an artists work, as well as the impact of songs on listeners. It gets away from the 'hype' and image oriented elements of the scene. The exclusive interviews in the show are meant to focus on the hearts and souls of the artist and listener.

Marcie JoyWhat Singer/Songwriter do you admire most right now with their style?

I am extremely impressed with the output of vocal trance in the last year. It was one song after another taking my breath away with powerful melodies, catchy lines, passionate performances, and unique vocal stylings. It's keeping the genre fresh and exciting. The list of Singer/Songwriters whose work touches me deeply includes Jaren, Emma Hewitt, Audrey Gallagher, Sarah Howells, Aruna, Nadia Ali, Jes, Jan Johnston, Anita Kelsey, Tiff Lacey, Zara, Susanna, Molly Bancroft, Cat Martin, Jennifer Rene, and so many more!!!

You've had the support of of Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, Above & Beyond, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz, Shah, Matt Darey, Solarstone, and more. How did you become such a prevalent force in this EDM society?

I've been working at this for awhile. I've written hundreds of songs in lots of genres, and I've had the chance to collaborate successfully with different talents around the world. I'm happy that some of my work has been recognized by the EDM society. There's a lot of talent in the world, and it's an honor anytime my work is featured.

"Hoping tonight for a Secret One Night Stand", haha .. care to tell us more about this interesting catch phrase?

I like to be a bit naughty sometimes with my music and wordplay. I had 3 'simultaneous releases' a few weeks ago, and I couldn't resist stringing their titles together to make that catch phrase. It works so perfect. hahaha. I don't control the release schedule of my tracks. The tracks were never meant to go together so blatantly....but once they were released, I realized their titles fit together in a cheeky way. I hope it made you laugh and intrigued you to check out the tunes!

The last Episode of your Radio Show was run parallel to a trivia competition, the winner received a "Beatport" voucher. Currently the stakes are even higher in your latest give away - you are now handing over 2 tickets to "Luminosity Before The Energy" and a Trackitdown.com voucher. How do participants enter & what do they need to do?

It's so easy to enter and WIN!!!! You can come to Luminosity for FREE! Or if you can't make it, you get a Trackitdown.com voucher to buy music and dj your own party! :)

All participants have to do is answer a trivia question about Behind the Lyric:

Marcie JoyA link from the above, you are actually performing at "Luminosity Before The Energy", do you still get the "jitters" and feel nervous before going on stage live?

I get the jitters weeks before a performance. I'm one of those people that stresses WAY in advance about a big event or due date. I think that helps me organize my time and get everything I need done, so that when the date arrives, I am confident and ready. It would not be good to be frantically pulling everything together the day of a performance. There's enough to think about the day of a performance as it is. I am still nervous right before going on stage because there are so many factors about a live performance that I can't predict. For example, one time I performed in a boxing ring. I was singing the theme song for the boxer's entry jog into the ring. I was naive about boxing, and I didn't realize that the mat in the ring was very squishy! I didn't realize this until I was standing on the mat in my high heels. I nearly fell over in front of everyone. So while I was singing, I had to try to keep my balance. With all my detail oriented, slightly obsessive pre-planning, I never expected that.  :)  There's always something similar at any performance. I can't possibly plan for everything.

Once I start singing and get a sense of the acoustics and vibe of the room, I will lose myself in the performance.  In a good performance, when I feel connected to the crowd, the jitters are replaced with pure happiness.

What does Miss Marcie do in her free time?

I started cooking this year. I have always been a workaholic, and when I am caught up in my work, I have a tendency to eat what is quick and easy instead of what is good and healthy. I'm really enjoying spending time in the kitchen experimenting with recipes. My favorite foods to make right now are soups and desserts. hehe. Hmmmmm, I guess even if I cook, I still don't eat that healthy.

I am learning to ski. My first time on the slope was a bit of a disaster with me zooming backwards down the bunny hill and crashing into the lodge, (OW!). But my second time was more successful and I'm starting to master my turns. I'm definitely staying on the bunny hill for awhile!

I also like to go out dancing, spend time with friends, read, and I'm a fan of Lost and 30 Rock.

What does 2010 hold for Miss Marcie, care to tease us perhaps?

It's flying by already, and my main focus is on a few new collaborations and my upcoming live performances. The next episode of Behind The Lyric is around the bend with amazing guests including Emma Hewitt. I'm excited about that!

Are you available for a dinner date this Friday?

How is your cooking? Send me dessert first, and I'll think about it! :)
