Hey everyone. It's been awhile since I posted here last, and for that I apologize. But I've been trying to get back into the groove of participating in the forums that I'm a member of, and this place is definitely on the list.
I have been thinking about this a lot lately... I've been trying to discover my style. By that, I mean the subgenre of trance that my work fits into, and the production methods I use to achieve that style.
Right now, my productions are very strongly reminiscent of melodic / pop trance. The best well-known example of this style I can give would have to be Antiloop:
I usually come up with a catchy melody or chord structure, and I bulid the track from there. The main caveat to this type of songwriting is that my songs usually average around four minutes in length. I have songs on my hard drive with intros that long! (Seriously, the Caspar Pound remix of Two Full Moons And A Trout by Union Jack is what, thirteen minutes long?!) I'd like to learn how to extend things a bit, but I'm sure that will come in time.
After a brief stint with Reason 4, I'm back to FL Studio. I can get my ideas into sounds very quickly with FL. I think that because my mind works in a series of loops and patterns, FL's piano roll makes it very easy for me to write music; sometimes, I will come up with a pattern, and then I will copy it and modify it in a rather mathematical fashion. Most of my life tends to revolve around sequences (I look for them in everything - thank my OCD), so it follows naturally that my songwriting should, too.
I'm really curious as to how tech trance and uplifting trance producers do their thing. I'd love to write some uplifting, but I always get stuck when I try. :P
Wow... this simultaneously encourages and discourages me, seeing as how Ben and I are close in age. ^_^ It spurs me on to become a better producer, but it also makes me upset at myself for not being dedicated enough to produce on a professional level after two or so years. But yes... I am very glad for you, Ben.
I don't really have much of a desire to spin. I mean, I would if I had access to some decks and vinyl, but laptop DJ-ing just doesn't excite me that much. (And that's fine - I'm pumped for everyone who's into it, and I think it's cool that they do it, but I'd much rather produce.) But I do have some questions about what kinds of tracks that DJs play.
Do professional DJs only spin new tracks? Are DJs just a very exciting means of advertising a product? I mean, I've been listening to di.fm's trance channel a ton over the last few years, and I never hear DJs spin bangers from the past. (When's the last time you heard someone work The Orange Theme by Cygnus X into a set?) Is this because they only spin new tracks, or am I just missing something?
I like this track a lot. It seems to me that you were going for a progressive track... am I right?
I like the melody. I also like the FX you used to transition. Your sound is overall really clean, too.
I'm sorry this isn't a very critical review, but I am not very good at producing myself and if there's anything wrong with this track, well, I can't find it.
Thanks for sharing - this one will defo work its way into my playlists.
I have a couple aliases, but... well, Silver Lining is my main act. I need to upload Separation Anxiety to my Soundclick, actually. Screensaver is a project that I intended to use for disco-house, but all of a sudden I started feeling trance instead, and I wanted something to put on the MySpace to showcase my work... so I threw it up there.
Hey man. Thanks for the critique, and thanks for listening! I'm glad you liked the bassline - it was a happy accident. (Most of my good basslines are, really.)
I appreciate your tip on working harder to get things to work. You really have a point there. I'll see how that goes on the next tune I come up with.
It doesn't matter whether you produce or not, really. I take critique wherever I can get it, and I appreciate your taking the time to review and listen to my track.
I'm downloading this right now. I'd download, listen, and review right now, but Magic Impuls by Exposure is on di.fm's trance channel at the moment, and I must listen to it.
So yes, I will revew this track for you very soon.
You all know what this means... add me please! ^.^
Anyhow... I was gonna produce some disco-house... and then all of a sudden this melodic radio trancer just pops out of my head and into the piano roll. This is the first decent song that I've finished since January or so, and it's the first song period that I've finished since March.
Yeah, I know... I used a few channels of Vanguard. So shoot me - I'm just glad to have a song done.
This song is unique in that it is the first song I have written in a long, long time that I wrote with my heart instead of my head. It's kind of dedicated to my girlfriend, from whom I am separated at the moment (she's at camp and cannot use her phone, and therefore we cannot talk). I think I had a much better result by writing from my heart... any thoughts on that matter?
Feedback would be welcomed and appreciated. If you have a MySpace, add me or PM me and I'll add you.
Get Technical. Try weird stuff with your mixing and routing. For instance, split your lead sound through 2 mixer channels. Put a delay on one set the delay to only output the delayed signal (not the original). Then filter the original (in the other channel). Then open the filter as you bring the sound in.
That was just an example... get creative. You have near-unlimited audiobending capabilities in most DAWs. Integrate some technical stuff into your workflow; it can be creativity-inspiring.
It's been awhile since I last posted here, for which I apologzie. Last Friday, I graduated from high school, and for a period of time before graduation, I had very little time to participate in stuff online. At one point, my inbox had 22 unread emails that demanded immediate attention that I just couldn't get to.
So now that I've graduated, my life has changed a ton. Right now, I'm staying at my brother's house with his wife and kids (my beautiful nieces). I'm thinking of going to college down here for a degree in computer science.
Also, I somehow managed to get a girlfriend... still trying to figure that one out. Love ya, Laure!
