So ASOT 350 is playing at the moment. I'm seventeen... almost of age. I'm graduating in twenty-nine days and I'll be able to do some stuff. I must say, though, that I've lived a very sheltered life thus far... I've never been to a concert, a real party, or a rave.

What are raves like? I am really really into trance music; I'd be going for the music. But I've heard from various (and fairly unreliable) sources that raves are full of drugs, sex, and booze. I'm a Christian, and I don't want to be a part of that kind of stuff.

Are there any raves that don't have a lot of drinking, sex, and drugs? Where do I find them?

To put it short, there will always be drugs/alcohol at parties, but no one can force you to take any if you don't want to.

So don't worry about it. If someone offers you anything, refuse politely and continue partying.

Okay, sounds doable... but is everyone doing it, or are there other people there just for the music?

Oh and one other thing, be sure to buy your own drink and keep it with you AT ALL TIMES!  If left unattended, someone could place poison or something else in it, causing you to pass out

Doubt that happens often Randy, but it never hurts to be cautious.

Sortevik, no, not everyone takes drugs at a party. And even if they do, why would you care? It's not like they'd want to attack you or something. Actually, you might get a hug instead, as people high on E tend to love everyone around Grin

lets put it this way, most of the drug use has gone down significantly since the 90's, however the element is still present, but thats true everywhere not just raves.  depending on where you live, the rave scene may have graduated to the posh club scene, and its more upscale than the warehouse days of yore.  but I myself am always down for the occasion warehouse rave (only happens once a year if that anymore).

but Drinking will be done heavily, although thats not exclusive to an edm party.

where are you from by the way?

Well, everyone, thanks for your input and advice. Now I know what to be prepared for. Grin

VitaminDLW, I'm from northern Michigan. There is no scene here... it's really sad, man. You say "trance" and people look at you like you just started talking in Greek. :'( Also, most of the people in my church don't agree with my music... but I can understand that because they don't understand my music. They're just scared of what doesn't make sense to them, I guess.

I know the feeling.

I am from Richmond, Virginia but I live in a small town outside of Boca Raton, Florida.

For some weird reason, people don't take kindly to electronic music and prefer rap instead.

It has been that way since 2004, but electronic music has started to somewhat make a comeback.  Sometimes on rap stations, they will play house and trance records once in a blue moon.

Myself?  My favorite types of music are all forms of Trance, House, Electro, Rock, Japanese Pop, and European Pop.  I also like a form of music I call "ROCKTRONIC".  It is basically punk rock combined with trance and house.  Some examples of Rocktronic bands include, but are not limited to Infected Mushroom, The Killers, Slipknot, Nemesea, Keane, Linkin Park and countless others.

Believe me, I also know what it's like. Try looking in Vermont. Everyone I've talked with has always thought I was talking about therapy when I mentioned trance to them. There's nothing close to a scene here either. I'm possibly the only person who actually listens to trance anywhere near where I live. It's especially hard trying to introduce it into the community when nobody will give it a chance. It really sucks that your church is being that way. Music is supposed to be one of the things that can transcend factors like that to bring people together.

Please never forget that you're special to me.

I've always noticed that at least here in the USA, the church/religious crowds tend to be the most closed minded about things they don't understand, and this goes back 400 years to the colonial days.  Does Salem which hunt  trials ring a bell to anyone?

But the best bet for anyone is to be in a major city (600,000+) to find a decent scene.  Small town america is just not where its at.

Although I am looking forward to the 10 weeks ima spend in Fairbanks, Alaska this summer on an internship.
