Google is definitely a good idea. I started to make songs this summer and one thing that has become noticeably different as I've evolved my work is that, as new issues emerged, I found various solutions for them. For instance, I try to look at my songs by dissecting it into sections. I try to decide how I want the beats to work, so I isolate the beats and go to work. I do the same for the bassline, the synths, the pads, etc. I research the ways to best make them sound perfect. I'd say my work is still very far away from where I want it to end up, but I think I've definitely learned a great deal by actively fixing problems. I'm learning about so many different effects and tricks you can apply to give the song flavor and getting different sounds to stand out. There are some free VSTs out there and also a ton of free percussion samples you can use legally, so definitely try to find as much freeware as you can before deciding you need to buy more stuff just to make a good song, because, chances are, you can accomplish a lot by just a little extra to go into it and it is often free to use.
Other than that, definitely come to appreciate and love what you create. Add nuance if you want. Put sounds in random places. Just go to town with it!
