Help me make my guitar sound "Trance-like!" -
26 February 2009, at 15:15
Boy the coffee's kickin' in good this morning lol! Okay, I mentioned in my previous post that I play an acoustic guitar, and it just occurred to me that there might be an affordable recording device I could use to create a Trance sound from my guitar. Now my guitar cannot take an adapter so I can't connect it to an amplifier or the like. So it looks like I'll have to do some old fashioned style recording here. Any ideas as to what affordable ($100-200 range) devices are available for this purpose?  :hp:

Im sure you can go to a music store to pick up some sort of Acoustic mic that will clip onto the fret board or something.

Or, pick up a Shure SM 57 Mic (about $90) and a mic stand that will position the mic right near the guitars opening.

Just a little tip. If your DAW supports VST plug-ins (more likely it does) then I suggest that you look for Neon Gate by Dream Vortex Studio. It would help you get trancey rhythms out of your acoustic without being stuck with presets. Basically it's a gate that you can program to a certain rhythm that you want. So, in theory you can have 2^16 combinations, although I'm sure you'll be happy with programming a handful. ;) Have fun!

Don't use a 57 for recording acoustic, unless you want to get a really dull sound from the acoustic, which is probably not something you want for trance (you want that super high-endy kinda deal). For mic recording, get a small diaphragm condenser mic. You can find them at www.sweetwater.com for decent prices, although a nice sounding mic can get pricey. For your price range, pick up the akg 170, record it, eq it to cut out the low end a bit, compress it a lot, a throw a stereo delay on it. That will get you the sound of sunlounger-style which I think is what you mean by "trance-style" guitar. Hope that helps!
