How important is sidechain and making the track pump and have a dynamic feel and have that in your face sound?

I hate the sidechain now, because it's used so heavily that it becomes an obnoxious throb. It's sometimes fine when its used for rhythmic purposes, but it's rarely used well in that way.

Trance isn't supposed to be in your face though. You're supposed to absorb all the elements as they scatter around, not focus on something that keeps pulsing at you. That's just my take, though. Trance used to not have the sidechain, but around late 2005, sidechaining was being used all over. In fact, I don't think sidechaining sounds good in other genres either, like house or techno. The only song where I think sidechaining worked well was Super8 & Tab - Helsinki Scorchin'. Lots of other songs sound awful.

Use it wisely, if you must use it, because I think sidechaining is really killing trance songs, more so than the much maligned supersaw.

I've used sidechaining pretty heavily in my new track, because it can help eliminate muddiness with the lower frequencies and pad sounds, which tend to dominate an overall mix. I think however that for my next one, i'll scale back a bit, because it maybe does sound a bit strange having all the pads sidechained. You have to experiment though, as practice makes perfect. :)

As for general tracks, yes sidechaining is overused, no doubt about it. Funnily enough I was thinking the same to myself the other day before this thread came to fruition.

i was doing a study of some popular tracks and notice that side chain is used alot and was searching for a compressor to give me the effect but asked myslef do i really need it because i want to be different as my sound is concerned and dont want to overuse it so i decided to ask

Yeah man, and good thing you did actually, because it raises a number of good points I think. Nitrous Oxide is a guy who relies a lot on sidechaining, as his infamous basslines are formed around that pumping sound made from such compression. It's good to be different though, sidechaining is nice, but overuse is just annoying lol.
