Building a PC -
4 October 2007, at 21:57
I'm thinking on building my next pc.

My question to you is, which components would you use?

I know that there are some that don't work togheter, so I want to do it right the first time.

Please give me your build ups so I can cheat! ;)

I currently run a 2.66 dual core intel overclocked to 3.5 Ghz with 4 gigs of ram and crossfire ati x1950s with a creative x-fi xtreme music that i built myself, prior to that i have owned a 2ghz athlon 64 and a 1ghz p3 all built by me from scratch

I would suggest an Intel Core 2 Duo if you're going to be gaming, you should probably stay away from anything lower than 2.4 Ghz, amd has some nice affordable chips as well in the athlon x2 series of processors

you should look at a motherboard with two pci-express x16 slots a few pci slots for legacy components as well as add on cards [ie. sound] and as many SATA slots as possible, since i would recommend them for hard drives and even burners due to the sleeker, faster more reliable interface, but almost every motherboard still comes with ide slots so you can reuse your hard drive and current burner if you like

let me know how much you're willing to spend and what your main usage of the system is, and I can recommend some parts
good luck

wow i cant believe i found both my interests in one forum. :)

First of all, you have to decide what your computer is going to be used for and your budget. (tell us this so we can help!)
# Re: Building a PC - 8 October 2007, at 11:56
Hey mate, as slave said, it depends of what your computer will be used for...
if it's for producing I can help you, cause I've just bought a new one 1 week ago :D

I will actually use it both for production and some gaming! :D

I'm thinking about spending around $2000 to $2600.

Thanks!

By the way, nice and powerful pc you got PsychoKilla666! :)

I use Ableton, but will probably also use Reason after a while.

I'm open for OS suggestions! ;) Using XP now. Yes, want to talk about pc here, don't know much about mac or anything. But of course, if anyone know anything about other way's to build, I will be glad to hear about that! :)

you probably should stick with xp unless you are comfortable enough with linux, and then again i dont know if linux has any good producing progs, theres also no reason on gods green earth that you should get vista, it only tries to look better and runs every application imaginable slower than xp

2000-2500 is a very good amount and you can build nice systems for much less going the DIY route anyway

Very Nice AMD Dual-Core CPU [3Ghz] Unbeatable in the price range
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103773

Intel's Answer to the AMD, Core 2 Duo @ 2.66
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115029
faster front side bus and bigger cache [good for gaming], sacraficing hyper-threading and Ghz and being more expensive than the AMD on top of all this

ATI X1950 Best Graphics Card in its Price Class http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131055
has a rebate and free shipping, as do both processors [free ship]

ATI HD 2900 if you want to go Future Proof with DirectX 10 Support
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102095

MotherBoard depends on the CPU you chose, but I would make sure it has 2 PCI-Express x16 slots so you can double up on graphics cards down the line when the prices drop a bit, as far as sound cards go I would go Creative, they are the leaders in the pc sound business and even if they have some nice competition, I've seen multiple cards having a hard time or all together crashing a system because some lazy developers based their drivers on creative boards, any of the new X-Fi cards are very nice, I would recommend the XtremeGamer as it has a better chipset than the XtremeMusic, also the more 3GB SATA slots the better, I would recommend you grab burners and hard drives in SATA and use the one or two IDE-slots it comes with for your old devices so you can still use those if you chose to.

P.S. I have vista and i cant live without it. maybe try dual boot, but i am one of the few pple in the world that like vista and i do ALOT on my computer, as far as mixing, design, gaming, and a little producing.

Thanks PsychoKilla666! It's just the help I'm looking for! :D Looks great, and thank you for including links! I also think I'll stick with XP. Works fine, and I understand that Vista are sucking alot of power. Anyway, I really don't care how the OS look like, I just want to use the programs in it! ;)

I also have a question on what other products that fits with PsychoKilla666's setup! I need all products to work togheter. All from Ram to dvdplayer/burner etc. etc.

No slave_25637, don't think I will change my monitor or keyboard/mouse!

alrite, very well then, although every single one of my friends who knows anything about computers has vista, and we all love it, and we're not uber-geeks either. I just ask you look past all the bad press and make an opinion for yourself.

that being said:

Case - One of my friends has one, its quiet, sleek, and small, a very nice case thats not too big. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16811129154

Motherboard - I have this one myself, its got loads of features http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813188013

Processor - Quadzilla http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16819115027

Graphics Card - Works really well with both DX9 and DX10 games (DX10 is vista only) http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16814130079

Hard Drive - Fast and lots of space http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16822148274

Optical Drive - One to do it all (Don't bother with blu-ray or hd-dvd yet) http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16827249020

Sound Card - Absolute beast for production and gaming http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16829102015

Ram - Superfast DDR2 ram and plenty of it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145176

PSU - Not a place to go cheap http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16817153039

Subtotal - 2,592.92

Mail in Rebates - 100
Total 2,492.92 (Excluding shipping, which shouldnt be too much)

no matter what OS you get, get the 64 bit version of it, it will let you use the full power of your CPU and your RAM. But keep in mind you will need 64 bit drivers for everything.

Remember these are just suggestions, if you have any questions just feel free to ask and dont be shy to send us your final configuration to make sure everything will work. (Also to have us envy your new system)

Shy?! lol :p

Thanks alot slave_25637, for taking your time! :D

I'm gonna start reading everything now, so I'll get back to you on what it will be, and have your opinions on that!

Thanks! :)

read any gaming review vista is too busy using your pc to run rather than your game, no game will ever have higher fps in vista than xp, i agree with the 64 bit part but last time i checked drivers were still flaky, hopefully thats better by now, i am gonna install the 64 bit xp once i get around to it

Case does look sleek, but I hate doors and scfewless drive bays, sorry I'm a picky bitch, lol

RAM is too expensive, they got a great deal on these gaming sticks
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211188

Burner is way too expensive, you might as well get two of these for less
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106070

Hard-Drive is nice for storage, I'd recommend this for the operating system though
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136011

Sound-Card is nice, you might want to splurge on that, or check this one out
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102014

Video Card is overkill, but I guess its up to you if you want to splurge on a lower bit memory interface card on steroids [nothing personal just not nvidia fan] and theres always the 1gb ATI option which is still cheaper than this thing

Quad-Core is also overpriced imo, unless you want to go super future proof instead of higher clock and performance in applications out today

Motherboard depends on your choice of AMD vs Intel, so if you're leaning towards either, let us know and I can check for you, [i didnt even look at slave's choice since I dont want to make you chose a processor]

I would prefer my lower cost system, but slave's system you could probably take to your grave, maybe adding hard-drives and another video card in sli/cf further down the road, as well as doubling the ram, which you can always do

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/10/08/parallel_processing/

might help make your cpu decision, and even though AMD is not used in the tests, if you happen to agree with the reviewers and stay on dual core for now, AMD has the price and clock advantage as well as offering hyper-threading [hyper-transport, same shit different name] which intel is not including in dual/quad-core desktop cpus

No, not yet!

I have to move first, so I won't be able to build it yet, but I will soon post what I think I will build, and have your opinions! :)
