Gunman opens fire in Colorado Theater, killing 12 and hurting 50 -
20 July 2012, at 17:25
Please send thoughts, prayers and condolences to Colorado today.

During a showing of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES in a theater in Aurora, Colorado, James Holmes, a 24-year-old lone gunman dressed in body armor and a gas mask, opened fire, killing 12 people and injuring at least 50.

As a person who has loved ones in a university in my native land affected by a similar incident, I know the feeling. My thoughts and condolences to all affected.

In my opinion, if we are going to be a nation that allows its citizens to have firearms, we need to, at the very least, make it tougher for homicidal maniacs to get their hands on them. With the current system, there are loopholes where people with unsound and psychopathic minds can get their hands on weapons easily.

Unfortunately this is what happens when you allow people to buy assault rifles, sidearms, etc so easily. This guy walked in there armed to the teeth and just started blowing people away. If this shouts for gun control and re-thinking the whole 2nd amendment, nothing will.

Mass shootings like this are starting to become a yearly thing here, and they really need to do something. Unfortunately all the right wing states is that "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." Well by letting these nut jobs get guns so easily, and with more and more American people being pushed to work to barely survive and get treated like utter crud by companies without any time to mentally recuperate, this is going to happen more and more.

It is truly a sad day when somebody has no utter regard for anyone and involves people from 3 months old to 43 years old and fires at all.

My condolences to all the families who had loved ones involved in this.

Couldn't agree more with both of you.

That "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." thing is complete bullshit. If that sad excuse for a human being didn't have access to all those weapons, it would've definitely been much harder for him to slaughter so many innocent people. Guns don't kill people, but they definitely make it easier for people who want to kill people.

And no, higher control and restrictions won't make it any better. Only a full ban on firearms can stop things like this from happening. Of course, psychopaths will still try, but it will be much harder for them and they would have to genuinely sweat their asses in order to get to that number of victims with only a knife or something that doesn't have the damage potential of a firearm.

Edit:

And another thing, please stop making these psychos celebrities. The media should refrain from publishing their names and give them all that attention that they desire so much. That attention is often the only reason behind these acts. Try not to give them that satisfaction.

First of all, my thought are with the victims of this horrible event.

Yes, the lame excuse: Guns don't kill people...
But guns ARE made to kill people...

It's been said by the others already also, but a change of the gunlaw is the least they can do. It may not stop these killings, but it might stop some of them. And better try ANYTHING to prevent them, then to shut your eyes for this great problem and continue to find excuses not to change the gunlaw. But I'm sure that's what they will do again. While waiting till next time something like this happens again.

To further reinforce and specify this point, this maniac was carrying an AR15 assault rifle, a Remington Shotgun and two Glock semi-automatic pistols. A person with a disturbed mind like his should not even be allowed near a firearm, let alone the arsenal he had. This was partly (if not THE) result of lack of vigilance and failure to do thorough background checks before these firearms were dispensed to him.

If that's not enough, when police searched his home, it was riddled with booby traps. It was so dangerous, they had to send drones in to investigate instead.

I completely agree 100%!

As you stated in an earlier post, tightening gun laws would, at the very least, put the breaks on this violent cycle.

The problem here is that there is a lobbying organization called the NRA (National Rifle Association) that will raise hell if anyone tampers with their "right to bear arms". Everytime we try to make changes to or strengthen our gun control laws, the NRA's influence plays a big influence in making sure nothing changes. Then everyone wonders why shootings like these keep happening.

In Japan, Russia, and most of the European Union, only the police and military are allowed to have lethal weapons. As a result, shooting incidents are relatively low in these places compared to the US.

Ye I know about the NRA. Those people are a bunch of morans. I even remember them having a conference in Columbine, about a day after the massacre there.

I know I shouldn't say it, but maybe it's about time there will be a massacre in between many NRA members. Maybe that will finally open their eyes.

I suggested the idea of making it so only the Police and Military are allowed to have lethal weapons here in the United States to a few of my schoolmates, but a number of them were against that idea saying that if that were the case, only the bad guys would have weapons.

In Japan, Russia and some European countries, only the police and military are allowed to have lethal weapons. Possibly because of this, shooting incidents are VERY low in those areas compared to the US.

Thoughts?

So what if only the bad guys have weapens. Usually, normal people have nothing to do with them. Here small criminals like burglars don't have weapens, so you don't need a weapen to defend yourself.

Weapens kill more innocent people than are defended with it.

Here people who are member of a shooting sportclub have a licence for a weapen. But there are strict rules for it (weapens in safes, ammunition seperated from the weapens, etc.) and those people are psychologically scanned.

We had a shooting like that only once here, last year at a mall in Alphen aan de Rijn, where 7 people got killed. And the rules for possession of weapens were immediately strictened again. In the US they just prefer to do..... nothing, except for waiting till the next event. That already took place btw, in a Sikh Temple... How long will it take for the next one?

Its very true Remco. CNN posted a history of violent mass shootings in the US quite a bit ago. The number of them went from one happening at 20-30 years apart to the current which is several a year. We do absolutely nothing. And these people who get caught, if they don't shoot them self before the police arrive, normally sit in jail for years before their trial, as they have to be proven innocent then most of the time get off on insanity and get to live the rest of there lives in a five star asylum.

Bunch of muppets in the government right now. They focus so much on the second amendment and how we need guns instead of realizing what happens when you give 300 million people them.
