A driver's license, driver license, driver licence, or driving licence (see spelling differences) is an official document which states that a person may operate a motorized vehicle, such as a motorcycle, car, truck, or a bus. The laws relating to driver's licensing vary between jurisdictions. In some jurisdictions, driver's licenses are issued after the recipient has passed a driving test, while in others, a person acquires a license before beginning to drive and when that driver first gets his license, if they are under the age of 17 he/she may not drive with a non-family passenger for six months (exempting the states of South Carolina, Florida, and Mississippi). Different categories of license often exist for different types of motor vehicles, particularly large trucks and passenger vehicles. The difficulty of the driving test varies considerably between jurisdictions, as do factors such as age and the required level of tuition.
