Music has the power of making us feel better or worse, no doubt about it. But is there a relation between our personality and the music we like?

I don't like generalizing, but it's somehow known that the music we listen to really reflects our personality. For example: people into Rock/Metal are angry, rebellious, "dark". People into pop are tidy, neat, trendy and without worries. The trance people are peaceful, creative and willing to explore beyond the obvious in life.

Do you agree with this? Can we really categorize people's personalties based on the music they listen to?

No I tend to dissagree.  I know alot of people who like rock that are not angry dark rebellious people.  I also know people who like rap, but are yet trendy, neat, fashionable and surley not "ghetto".

Atleast in the states, if all of us trance lovers were to be stereotyped, and if it were true, that means we are either homosexual, or up on drugs most of our days.

For me, i know neither of them are true 

Sure, you will find people that do fit the stereotypes rather well, but look farther into the musics culture and you will find so much more then what appears on the surface.

Other than the fact that your trance description pretty much describes me, I also have to disagree that you can make serious generalizations based on people's music.

You all have good points there. I still think it has something to do with the personality though. Of course every person is unique and you can't put everyone in the same box, but there are slight connections between people who like same type of music, IMO.

definitely hypnotic there are slight connections but as r33 said there are exceptions to the rather very "generalised" rule.

for me its what the music does, not what it defines. i listen to trance because it is an escape from stress and a great way to relax. it doesnt really define me as a person. but i have to say i am quite mellow and passive, and peaceful oh and then of course ime quiet so ime elementally fullfilling a broad assumption if you wish. i suppose the benifit of being like this is that girls like it coz its just different. nuthin macho.  hmmmmm?    :/

In a country like Mauritius, where Trance is not that well spread, i could have used Trance to define myself, but then, Im a very outgoing person, i shout, i do craziness, im not peaceful at all, well im peaceful with myself, but then again, i do sometimes say : I listen to Trance and Im proud of it!!Trance drives me into different moods,according to the tracks, sometimes, i feel happy, at times, i feel sad..its how your perception of trance is!To tell, Im the only girl i know who listen to trance and believe me, THAT is something!!!so i think, there is a link between your personality and the music you listen to!
As for rock music, its the trend of the youngsters here and yeah, they do dress up in black, wear all kind of things just like their idols..

I have to agree that music has a HUGE effect on an individuals everyday life (personality). Fashion my not be the highlight of the point Hypnotic was trying to make, I think he has an excellent point that the music you listen to shapes and molds you as a person and people who listen to trance ARE more open minded than the average Joe. I know Ive always been effected by the music I listened to and through all the different types of music I listen to I feel completely different about Trance! I feel like a different person. Yes Ive been getting older through the years but Trance has always made me feel satisfied and when I feel satisfied my personality reflects that. Im not saying a rocker or pop listener ISNT satisfied but the style of music probably doesnt have the same effect that trance has on a person, you know? We dance different, we may talk different, we may dream different. It really is a music that makes you ONE.

i kinda agree with you, tabletoprocker!! Well, i always thought that im different cos i listen to trance, i feel it most of the time cos im in a country where the youngsters only cares about rock ad pop!!!
And definitely, Trance listeners are very open-minded people, and seriously very cool persons.. but as far as possible, i try not to jugde others' preferences!!! We do dance to trance, but at times, i feel that the music makes our body do those movement!! lol!
I wish i knew more people who have the same taste as i do!!!
