Once the master genre for Electronic Dance Music, it has become the poppy, cheesy top 40 "dance" to now what is just god awful stuff. You can't even dance to this stuff anymore.
I don't know what happened, but when EDM became its own sub-genre that the hipsters latched on to, it went south quick.
Ye weird actually, because the term 'EDM', the (American) follow up of the (European) term 'Dance Music' is originally the overall term for all electronic dance music, including trance.
But you're right, it hardly has anything to do with dance music anymore and fits more with the term 'Pop Music' which also has a lot of electronic influences nowadays.
