Written by Marjan on 16 March 2009 in Interviews

Leon BolierHaving recently released his debut album, Leon Bolier is one of the hottest producers at the moment. With releases on labels like Armada Music, Blackhole Recordings, Spinnin Records and Sweden-based Captured Music, his productions are getting played at parties all over the world. His releases have been caned by the worlds big djs, like: Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Sasha, John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Marco V and many many more. Besides. his tracks have been compiled on CDs by e.g. Tiesto (In Search of Sunrise) and Armin van Buuren (A State of Trance), and on other big compilations.

Due to these successes he's been a popular remixer now, and becomes a more and more well known DJ, getting more and more gigs, in the Netherlands and abroad.

We caught up with Leon for a small chat.

Leon Bolier"In my mind I hear you calling, but my response won't be received" - When I heard you and Elsa Hill team up to produce the track "No Need to Come Back" that is when I discovered your beautiful and enchanting music. You use elements in your productions that have such an unique and authentic element. What inspires you?

Everything really - usually it's just when I am wherever I am I hear chord progressions and melodies in my head, or beats and edits you know... and then I can't wait to go back to the studio. About "No Need To Come Back", I wrote those lyrics myself when one of my best friends died of cancer back then.

I understand that Energy 52's Cafe Del Mar was very influential in your evolution from Hard House to Melodic Trance, was there a particular version of the tune that inspired you?

It was the Three n One remix that was very popular even on the big commercial radio stations back in 96 or 97.

How did you become part of Armada Music?

Through Armin - he made his publisher (Maykel Piron) contact me for a publishing deal when Maykel was still working for Warner/Chappel Benelux. Soon after that Maykel, Armin and Dave Lewis decided to start Armada Music.

What club is your favourite to party at when you're not behind the ones delivering the party?

In Holland, usually it doesn't depend on the club for me, but it's about the party. I really enjoy the Intuition, Luminosity and Create parties for instance, apart from the big festivals.

You were in attended Trance Energy this year. How was it? Whose performance did you enjoy most? Will you return to the stage next year?

Leon BolierI always enjoy Trance Energy. About next year, that's up to ID&T of course Smile. I checked out my friends Wardt (Re-Ward), Cliff Coenraad and Joop closely, and afterward I just wandered around and had loads of fun with so many people I know. Checked out Armin, Patterson, Aly & Fila, Schossow, Jules and Jochen Miller in the meantime.

How did you and Joop meet?

Joop received my first promos from Spinnin records and the A&R manager told me Joop was calling him time after time being very enthusiastic about my productions. Couple of months later the both of us played at the same party (actually one of my first DJ gigs), and soon afterward Joop asked me if we could do a track together - that's what happened, and that track was called Joop - The Future :)

"Pictures" has been an explosive record you've recently launched. Where did you spend most of your time recording this?

Thatss pretty simple: in my studio Smile Though I visited some fellow producers to do collaborations, others visited me. I visited Galen Behr, Joop, Sied van Riel and Cliff Coenraad & Thomas Hagenbeek to do the collaborations at their studios.
