'The Track That...' with Ben Lost

Tim Stark is doing a serie called 'The Track That...' which he does exclusively for TrancePodium. It features artists naming and talking about certain tracks that had a fundamental impact on their artistic lives. In the 2nd episode: Ben Lost.

The track that I wish I’d produced is Mathew Jonson’s ‘Marionette’. It’s a magical piece of music, timeless in it’s construction and delivery. James Holden’s ‘The Inheritors’ is another one. I have a lot of time for James Holden. A true artist. I’m so glad we managed to snare him for a couple of Lost Language remixes before he moved onto new musical pastures. Vangelis’ ‘Bladerunner’ soundtrack, The Hacker’s ‘Reve’s Mecaniques’, Gesaffelsteins ‘Aleph', the bulk of Depeche Mode’s back catalogue - I  could go on…..

The track that could make a grown man cry is Chris Raven’s ‘I Know You Love Me Too’. Late 90's Trance is untouchable when it comes to heart achingly beautiful riffs. Humate's '3.1' and Sasha's 'Belfunk' also have me swooning my gut's up. Sonic Youth's 'I Dreamed a Dream' and The Smith's 'This Night Has Opened My Eyes' both transport me back to an emotionally confusing adolescence. Weak drugs, barren sexual wastelands and tears before bedtime.

The track that never fails to put a smile on my face is the Nalin and Kane remix of Jam & Spoon's 'Stella'. It reminds me of a great time in my life, driving North on the M1 from London to Sheffield on a Saturday morning. 'Everlast' by The Ambush is another service station classic. Amphetamine's 'Trope' reminds me of the preceding night at Turnmill's.

The track that I’m playing every gig at the moment is Amir Abbasi's 'Angelus Sine Sensu'. It's one of my favourite ever Lost Language signings. Oliver Lieb's mix of Natious 'Amber' is another track that I find myself dropping in every set. His tough, no nonsense production still stands head and shoulders above 99% of the fussy pop-trance guff released these days.

The track that isn’t EDM, but rocks just the same is the 12” mix of X-Mal Deutschland’s ‘Qual’ from 1983. They're one of my favourite ever bands. Anja Huwe is a mesmerising front woman. And while we're passing through that part of Europe - D.A.F's 'Als War's Das Letzte Mal' and ‘Thrash Me’ by Maleria! are two throbbing German masterpiece's that are cold, hard and groovy in all the right places.

The track that shoulda been in a movie is Jamie Steven’s ‘The Wonder of You’. Those strings were made for some kind of crescendo, be it in a club or cinema. ‘Body Hammer’ by Ulterior would make for a perfectly pensive, late night driving scene. In fact, Ulterior should have their own movie. Com Truise’s ‘Brokendate’ could have made the 'Drive’ soundtrack. Incidentally, Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game' and ‘Goodbye Horses’ by Q Lazzarus are two of my favourite songs, from two of my favourite films. Oh, and ‘Host of the Seraphim’ by Dead Can Dance from the movie 'Baraka'.

The track that is so perfect in its Original form it should never be touched by man nor remixer Doesn’t exist. It’s an overly precious, fallacious line of thinking. All art is imitation. Intellectual property is bollocks. You can't fence off an idea. Scooters 1996 cover of ‘Rebel Yell’ didn’t metaphysically tamper with Billy Idol’s 1983 original. David Bowie's version of 'Wild is the Wind' is superior to the Johnny Mathis recording.

The track that changed my life were Leftfield and Lydon's ‘Open Up’ and The Prodigy’s ‘Their Law’. I was playing in bands, and pretty much exclusively into guitar music until around 1993-1994 when these tracks were released. The Sex Pistols and Pop Will Eat Itself associations made dance music palatable for narrow minded punk kids like me, who previously thought all 'club' music was ’townie’ by definition. These tracks marked my first real steps towards dance music. Viper's 'The Twister' on Hooj was amongst the first of my Trance vinyl purchases.

The track that I’ve just put out there is the Exhibition V compilation on Lost Language, my first since 2005. Guy J's remix of 'Space Maneuvers’ is a current, personal highlight. I also have a band called Federation, a kind of goth/trance hybrid, if you can imagine such a thing. Our most recent release was a song called ‘New Religion’, which we put out on our own ‘Feed the Moth’ label earlier this year. We have another single due out in April. A double A-Side, no less.

I've made an accompanying Spotify playlist so you can hear what I'm talking about.
