Whether your working on an original production or a remix of another tune (vocal or non), how long on average does it take you from start until completion?

this should spur an interesting conversation...

Usually my tracks can take as quick as 20 minutes to as long as a week to finish.

Most of the time though, my tracks take about 2-4 hours

Hmm for me it can take several hours to complete a track. With the new Pearl Dreams project that I hope to start soon, I expect to spend in excess of 10 hours on it, purely because FL has so many options which you can automate to make the track interesting e.g. filters, phasers and flangers. :)

My songs recently have been done over the span of 2 days and consist of about 8 hours of work total.

im pretty jealous, it takes me a few weeks or more to completely something that I'm actually satisfied with.  Of couse I work with trying to master the tracks, and make sure its somethings that could actually be dropped in a club set.

Don't be! Weeks is pretty normal for a good production. The few hours, couple of days productions are crap (unless you are real pro and done it over the years). Because I can't really make music more than 5-6 hours a day it takes me few weeks or months to complete a tune. If I take my work really seriously and have a lot of inspiration I can finish a tune within a week/week 1/2.

not thats more along the line of an answer I expected.  Most producers I know who are signed will agree with me.  The only one of my friends who can chop out "good" tunes in a day is Breakfast and he's an exception, so he doesn't count in my book lol

I make my tunes over a couple of weeks. The first day I'll spend at least 5 hours straight so I can get my ideas down there and then without losing a train of thought. Once past that, the ideas are there and all I have to do is elaborate and edit. But for some reason, for the last 2/3 years, I seemed to think up the tunes in pairs. So I come up with two tunes and make them almost simultaneously. I'll write some of one, and then some of the other back and forth and come out with two tunes at the same level of creation and modification. And then, I'll spend more time on one tune, forgetting the second one, then when the first is annoying me, I'll go back to the second one...I have weird creation patterns though :D

yea i know how it is.  This summer I started remixing an A-Capella to a song into an electro-house track, but I couldnt figure out where to take it, cuz I had those other melodies in my head, so i started a new project and now I'm 95% of they way through wrapping up this epic stadium trance tune.  I'll post up on TP soon, but the presentation is going to be extra special.

I do plan on finishing that remix up before the end of the summer...

See I have no idea how much time I will spend making tracks now I have monitors, because I suspect there are lots of little details that I will now become aware of. I'm therefore hoping to spend lots of time on the track to try and make it perfect.

Yeah if you're a perfectionist (which is good) even the little thing will bother you (a crash for an ex.).
I even worked for a whole week just on the intro. I think the intro is the most difficult part for creating and the most important. If the intro is good it will make the people continue listen it and than you have to create awesome breakdown as well. That's the whole point. Do not try to wrap up a track in days. Work on it as long as you think it needs work. You might even get better ideas after a week or so. If you can't work on that particular track anymore, then work on some scores that you will create into a track at some point.

I work though 5-6 hours straight for those two days though, sometimes even more.
