Super8 & Tab feat. Alyna - Delusion -
17 January 2009, at 06:08
So let me start by saying that my first, really good taste of Super8 & Tab came last spring when they obliterated 2008 with Elektra. I fell in love with it the very first time I heard it and by the end of the year, it turned out that a vast number of trance addicts also loved the tune. There was much to love about it. The song teased and delightfully surprised many as it opened up by cycling between progressive and tech, and then elevated the song with its euphoric breakdown. In 2007, there was Suru, another really good track by these guys. In other words, I've really enjoyed listening to their work.

I have to be honest, I'm not that big on Delusion and I don't really get the appeal either. I mean, it's dreamy and the bassline is decent, too. But I feel like nothing new has come forth here. The vocals are OK, but were nothing compared to Suru, and against the backdrop of the rest of the song, this one sounds kind of cheesy.

Maybe someone could point out something more subtle or amazing that maybe I'm not seeing here?

Hmm, well I personally quite like the song. I think it's one of the best off Anjuna Vol.6. :hp:

From what I'm hearing from you Rover, you may have just had too high expectations for Delusion. That can always make a track lose its appeal once you actually hear it. The same thing happened to me when I got Armin's Imagine album. Yeah, it was a great album, but I was still expecting a bit more from it.

As for my opinion about Delusion, I think it's an amazing track myself. It's a really entrancing tune that easily gets you into it early on, as I found out from Corsten's Countdown #78 last month.

No it's true. It's kind of that samey sound from Super 8 and Tab but I personally really enjoy the Ronski Speed and Sun Decade remixes. At least it's not the same arp from the Made of Love remix!

I actually haven't heard the remixes yet for the song. I'll give them a go to see how they stand next to the original.

I was thinking I probably was expecting too much or maybe something similar to their earlier productions, but it's just my sincerest opinion that I don't think they came anywhere close to the quality of most of their songs. Super8 hit it out of the park with his 2004 solo Alba, and just hearing that next to the duo's Delusion shows the stark contrast in style, IMHO.

My review for Discogs..

Quote
There's nothing particularly special about this latest release, especially when taking to consideration that Super8 & Tab's previous works of the likes of Suru, Helsinki Scorchin', and Elektra had a very strong, trancey feel. Each of those other songs created the kind of depth, emotion, and atmosphere that trance stands for. Delusion falls well short of this.

Delusion isn't a bad song, so to speak. The melody is easy enough to listen to, though I unfortunately find it lacking in originality. But it isn't in your face, so you can make the case for this song being rather relaxing.

The structure of the song is very basic as well, taking the template of a copy-and-paste trance song more than the daring side of creative twists and turns. Simplicity isn't as much the issue, as their many simple structured songs that are above par, but originality is in this case. Opening with a bassline and beat, then quickly going to a melodic break, then the breakdown, there is nothing too exciting going on. It lacks the element of surprise their previous songs provided. Another problem is that the song seemed to pin the vocal section as its main focus, which unfortunately didn't go over well for me. It seemed to take the approach of trying to sound more appealing on a commercial level, as the singer draws out "This my deluuuusion", without completely moving away from the comfort zone of chord progressions. The use of vocals in a trance song can be a blessing or the bane of the song. I have to go with the latter in this case.

If nothing else, this song is mainly guilty of lacking originality. There are clearly better choices.

As such, I rate the entire release 3/5. And the Sun Decade Remix is a pretty interesting take on the song.

There's also a typo. In the third paragraph, it should say, "as they have many simple structured songs that are above par"

I have to admit, hearing it more and more I can't help but feel it's slightly cheesy. Don't get me wrong it's a nice track and i'm still a fan of it, it's just the way the track is I think.
